Best Radial

Radial arm saws are suitable for simple rip cuts and crosscuts; as well as tapers, rabbets, mortises, and other types of complex cuts. Radial arm saws require less space than table saws and can perform more varied alternate functions given the appropriate accessories. Blade alignment and adjustment are important considerations and the highest-quality radial arm saws are able to maintain the correct blade angle and require minimal readjustments in between jobs or throughout extended use periods. The best radial arm saws were manufactured from parts that were precision machined to higher tolerances thereby ensuring cleaner cuts and decreasing the probability of damaging expensive wood stocks.

Best Radial Arm Saws

The first radial arm saw or RAS was designed and patented by Raymond E. De Walt in 1922-23. Since then, the DeWALT brand of RASs have been popular amongst professional and recreational carpenters. Craftsman, Delta, Ridgid, Ryobi, and Startrite are also popular brands. Some De Walt, Craftsman, and Delta RAS machines that are 30 years old or so are still sought after by carpenters because of their durability, ease of use, and capability of producing smooth, highly accuracy cuts.

Best Radial Arm Saw

The Delta brand which first became available in the late 1940s and the DeWALT RAS machines are the main contenders for the title of the best RAS. A casual online search for radial-arm-saw reviews usually comes up with a number of sites that specifically cite the quality of these two brands. Nevertheless, the other makes are getting better and some of the “old timers” are beginning to try out the newer brands . Usually, it's the combination of usability, adequate motor power, cut accuracy, durability, and availability of parts and accessories that tips the scales in favor of the latest RAS models from Delta and DeWALT.

Craftsman Radial Arm Saw Model

The recall of about 3.7 million Craftsman brand RASs in 2000 because of safety issues (http://www.cpsc.gov/cpscpub/prerel/prhtml01/01031.html) had a dampening effect on the popularity of this brand. Craftsman RASs are still available from numerous hardware stores and equipment suppliers although they are not available on Amazon. With the blade guard in place, however, the affected models are fully functional and meet the safety standards mandated by the government. It is also worth mentioning that not all Craftsman RASs were included in the recall/repair order.

Craftsman 12 Radial Arm Saw

The Craftsman 12” Radial Arm Saw was not included in the 2000 safety recall. This model has been popular since the early 1970s and is easily one of the most widely distributed RAS. The bigger saw is suitable for larger stocks and this model is not that much different from the other Craftsman models. Note, however, that this model is not as popular as the 10-inch models and the user manual for this device can be hard to find.
