Best Train Sets

There are a bevy of companies that strive to satisfy the demand for model train toys (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rail_transport_modelling). Irrespective of the age or interests of the hobbyist, the best train sets are easy to assemble, have durable parts, and perform as advertised. As the model becomes more “realistic,” the quality usually gets better and the price goes higher. Overall, the most detailed "life-like" trains are still considered the best.

Best Train Set

For toddlers, the inexpensive wooden or plastic toy sets (from Brio, Thomas, etc.) are usually the most appropriate. As the train hobbyist or modeler gets older, they graduate to the more detailed model train sets (made mostly of metal and plastic). Atlas, Bachmann, Kato are just three of the more well-known brands. The Lego brand with its unique “L” scale lineup, is also becoming more popular. Mamod is a British company that specializes in steam-powered, ride-able scale models.

Best Ho Trains

Athearn, Atlas, Bachmann, Walthers are just a few of the many HO-scale model train manufacturers. These companies usually provide detailed product catalogs for their customers. The best-selling and the latest trains, tracks, accessories, structures, etc. are usually featured in these catalogs. Serious hobbyists usually make numerous comparisons among the brands with the help of these catalogs before they go out and purchase what they like.

Electric Train Tables

Train tables can be custom built from hollow-core doors, 1/2” plywood, fiberboard or similar types of materials. Other materials such as fiberglass can also be used but the amount of work and/or the cost could be a bit excessive. Train tables can also be purchased; and depending on the size, complexity, design, materials used, etc., they can be divided into three price categories: less than $100, $100 to 300, and greater than $300.

Electric Train Table

Numerous varieties and sizes of train tables can be found on the Internet. A nice example would be a Brio-and-Thomas-compatible, double-decker train table from Gadget Masters (http://gadgetmastersonline.com/). These multi-purpose play tables are usually made from birch, maple, or oak. The train set is on the inner deck which also functions as a toy cabinet. The outer deck functions as a board-game table, puppet stage, art table, etc.
